Are you sure you’ve done absolutely everything you can to find a job?

Job searching can feel overwhelming, but it’s important to focus your energy on the right strategies. Let’s break it down into actionable steps.

The Basics: Are You Covering These?

  1. Applying for Jobs Are you applying for at least 10 relevant roles per week? Focus on decent, well-suited positions on job boards and company websites.

  2. Connecting with Recruiters Have you researched and connected with at least one expert recruiter per week in your industry? Building relationships with recruiters can open doors to hidden opportunities.

  3. Networking Are you having at least two meaningful conversations per week with people in your network? Networking is one of the most effective ways to uncover opportunities that aren’t advertised.

If you haven’t ticked off these basics, off you pop—or start here!

Next-Level Job Search Strategies

If you’re already doing the basics, it’s time to level up your approach:

  1. Forensically Tailor Your CV Your CV should be tailored to each role you apply for. This means tweaking it to match the job description, using relevant keywords, and showcasing your achievements.(Need help? Check out this video guide on why tailoring your CV is critical.)

  2. Stay in Touch with Recruiters Don’t let recruiters forget you!

    • Suggest other candidates for roles they’re recruiting for.

    • Pop into their inbox every couple of weeks to remind them who you are.

    • Engage with their LinkedIn posts to stay on their radar.

  3. Leverage Your LinkedIn Connections Download your LinkedIn connections list (desktop version). Then, organise it into three tiers:

    • Tier 1: People who can help and say positive things about you.

    • Tier 2: Folks who might be able to help.

    • Tier 3: Everyone else (you can set this aside).

Reach out to Tier 1 and Tier 2 connections.

    • Meet for a virtual or real-life coffee.

    • Make the ask: Can they help? Do they know someone who can?

    • Get another connection: Ask them what they know about someone in their network.

What to Avoid on LinkedIn

LinkedIn can be a powerful tool, but only if you use it wisely.

🛑 Stop Posting About:

  • Your dinner, dog, or how unfair the job market is.

  • How many jobs you’ve applied for with no results.

  • Polls about unrelated topics (even if MAFSAU is your guilty pleasure!).

Start Posting About:

  • Your industry insights.

  • Interesting stories (practice your STAR stories here!).

  • New technology or tools.

  • A great boss or mentor who inspired you.

Your LinkedIn activity should position you as an engaged, knowledgeable professional, not someone venting frustrations.
