Videos & UK Job Market Briefing

The Chancellor promised 130,000 jobs. HSBC announced 1,000 places. Rolls-Royce is investing 300 million pounds in the UK. So why does the UK job market still feel so hard to get into? Because an announcement isn't a vacancy. This week's biggest UK jobs headlines were targets, early-career pipelines and factory investment, set against official vacancy figures at their lowest outside the pandemic since 2014. This video shows you how to read each one, where experienced jobseekers might still find a way in, and one rights change that's live right now. In this briefing: Why "create and support 130,000 jobs by 2030" is a target, not a list of vacancies What HSBC's 1,000 early-career places, and Balfour Beatty's last week, may say about where employers are building their teams Why Rolls-Royce's 300 million pound investment came with no job number, and which supporting functions to watch How permanent placements can rise while vacancies keep falling The tribunal deadline that doubled to six months on 1 October, and two more dates to check before you accept a new job A short caution on reading the reason given for redundancies, using the University of Nottingham dispute I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. Two UK companies announced redundancies this week. The headlines looked almost identical. What actually caused each one didn't. BBC Sport cut roles after a new director-general's cost target wasn't met through voluntary exits alone. A broadband provider called Voneus cut roles because it had just bought a failed rival's customers and didn't need two of everything. Same word, redundancy, two completely different stories, and knowing which is which changes what each one actually tells you about a sector or an employer. In this briefing: Why BBC Sport's 41 role cuts and compulsory redundancy threat are about new leadership and a cost target, not the sports industry How Voneus's redundancies after buying failed rival Airband are a straightforward acquisition clean-up, a different trigger entirely Where the real, funded hiring is this week: Balfour Beatty's 2,000-role recruitment drive, backed by a £2.1 billion order book Why ACAS's first rewrite of its disciplinary and grievance Code since 2015 now addresses AI in workplace process for the first time The employment tribunal time limit change landing in days, and what it means if you're facing, or recovering from, a dismissal TG Jones's ongoing store closures, and why the company still won't confirm a redundancy number I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. KPMG cut 200 more UK jobs this week and pointed to "market dynamics." In the same set of results, its profit rose 14% and its partners were paid more than ever. Both of those things are true. This briefing shows you the question that mismatch should make you ask, about KPMG or any other employer, and why it's more useful to your search than the national jobs figures on their own. In this briefing: KPMG cut around 200 more UK advisory jobs, including AI and cyber security roles, six months after cutting over 500 In the same period, KPMG's UK profit rose 14% to £576m, and its partners were paid more than PwC and EY for the first time in over a decade ONS figures show unemployment at 5.0% and vacancies still falling, described by the REC as "the same job market movie" jobseekers have been watching for months McLaren's £500m UK investment got real detail this week: a new factory, a first in-house SUV, and a manufacturing workforce set to double TG Jones closed more stores this week without publishing a redundancy figure for the round Two dated legal changes: employment tribunal time limits double to six months from 1 October, and the guaranteed hours consultation's outcome is still pending, likely into 2027 I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. One car maker opened a redundancy scheme for thousands of staff this week. Two days later, another put £450 million on the table for a thousand new roles, in the same industry. This briefing shows you the one question that tells those two stories apart, and why it matters more than any national hiring number this week, even the best one in nearly four years. In this briefing: UK permanent hiring rose for the first time in almost four years, while vacancies fell for the 34th month running, in the same report Jaguar Land Rover opened a redundancy scheme covering up to 4,000 roles, mostly salaried and management staff McLaren announced a £450m investment and 1,000 new jobs at its Woking technology centre, two days later What happened when Whitbread's Beefeater and Brewers Fayre closures actually went ahead this week, and why the redeployment promise held up better than expected Channel 4 confirmed its biggest job cuts in over 40 years Why the recruitment industry used its most positive jobs report in years to warn the government about its own guaranteed hours policy I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. Six major UK retailers just told the Prime Minister that rising costs are forcing job cuts. The same week, manufacturers facing the same costs posted their fastest hiring growth in two years. This briefing shows you the one question that tells the two apart. This week also brings a live test worth watching: Whitbread's promise to redeploy most of the 3,800 staff affected by its restaurant closures, and an update on the zero-hours consultation now that it's closed. In this briefing: Why six major retailers blaming rising costs for job cuts doesn't tell the whole story, and the one question to ask before you accept that explanation Manufacturing hiring hitting its fastest pace in two years, even as manufacturing growth slowed to a five-month low Whitbread closing 195 Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites and promising to redeploy most of the 3,800 staff affected, and how to judge whether that promise actually holds What changed in the zero-hours contracts argument now the guaranteed-hours consultation has closed, and why the debate has shifted from cost to coverage Where £53m in fresh government-backed manufacturing investment is quietly creating opportunities most headlines missed Why rising government borrowing costs and a tighter Autumn Budget could make employers more cautious over the next six weeks I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. Graduate job vacancies fell by 45.6 per cent in the year to July, reaching their lowest level since 2016. Non-graduate entry-level adverts also fell by 8 per cent, while total advertised UK jobs were down by 9.6 per cent. This isn’t simply a difficult year for graduates. The pool of available opportunities has genuinely become smaller. UK private sector growth just hit its fastest pace in four months. In the same report, private sector jobs fell for the 23rd month running. If you've been told a growing economy means an easier search, this week's data says that's only half true. This briefing looks at what's really happening underneath that split, a small publisher's redundancy that shows you exactly how to tell a real reason from a "market conditions" excuse, and where funded government investment is quietly creating opportunities away from the bigger headlines. In this briefing: Why UK growth hitting a four-month high didn't translate into more hiring, and what that means for how you read this week's headlines Graduate vacancies down 45% in a year, the lowest since 2016, and what that means if you're supporting someone early in their career How one 25-person publisher's redundancy shows you exactly how to spot a specific, traceable cause behind a "market conditions" excuse Why rising restaurant revenue alongside falling restaurant profit is worth asking about at your next interview Where £71m in mining investment and a £10bn housing package are quietly creating opportunities most headlines missed The contested £3bn price tag on zero-hours contract reform, and why it matters who's doing the counting I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations. UK private sector output grew at its fastest pace in four months — while private sector employment fell for the twenty-third month in a row. A growing economy doesn’t automatically mean employers are hiring. That distinction matters when you’re judging the UK jobs market and making decisions about your search. This week, UK job vacancies fell to a five-year low, just days after a widely shared report said hiring had "turned a corner." In the same seven days, over half of UK businesses said AI created new jobs, while one major retailer cut 200 head office roles and blamed AI for it. Both of those things are true, and neither cancels the other out. This week's UK jobs data shows a market that's splitting rather than simply improving or worsening, and the useful move isn't picking a side of the headline, it's working out which side of each split your own sector, employer or role actually sits on. In this briefing: Why the ONS vacancy figures and the REC/KPMG hiring survey can both be accurate and still point in different directions CIPD data showing public sector hiring intentions at 77% while private sector intentions are stuck at a record low How a Lloyds AI survey and Morrisons' 200 head office job cuts landed in the same week, and what that means if AI touches your role What Frasers Group's completed takeover of Harvey Nichols changes for the more than 1,000 people who work there Three specific things to check about your own search based on this week's data, not the headlines I'm Sarah Bryer, a recruitment insider and job search strategist with more than 20 years' experience across agency recruitment, in-house hiring and corporate organisations.
